POS Portal to distribute Ingenico NFC/EMV readers in U.S.

POS Portal, a national distributor of point-of-sale terminal modules, has selected Ingeico’s Telium series of NFC and EMV-enabled products for sale and distribution to its independent sales organizations in the U.S.

Under the agreement, POS Portal will distribute Ingenico’s Telium countertop terminals, NFC-enabled mobile devices, and customer-facing terminals, enabling merchants to accommodate all forms of payment including contactless, EMV, NFC mobile, and traditional magnetic stripe cards.

Smart Card Alliance forms Mobile and NFC Council

The Smart Card Alliance has announced the formation of the Mobile and NFC Council, a new industry body tasked with accelerating the adoption of NFC and raising awareness of the technology’s various capabilities.

“Many think of payments when they hear NFC, but the technology opens the door to many industries for innovative applications, such as ticketing, digital content exchange, secure identification, social networking, and communication between electronic devices,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director at the allaince. “The Mobile and NFC Council will provide a bridge between NFC technologies and the industries who want to adopt NFC-enabled mobile devices to discuss and promote common standards and best practices.”

Canadian banks issue NFC payment guidelines

Canada’s banking and credit union groups have come together to create a set of open guidelines for the development of mobile payments at point-of-sale in Canada.

This “Mobile Reference Model” will serve as a blueprint for how mobile payment capabilities can be offered in the Canadian market, including guidelines on how financial information is exchanged among various parties such as financial institutions, payment card companies, telecommunications companies and merchants, according to the Canadian Bankers Association (CBA).

virgin optimus Virgin Mobile launches first NFC phone

Virgin Mobile has set a May 15 launch date for the LG Optimus Elite, the first device in the operator’s lineup to feature NFC and Google Wallet.

Debuted by Sprint last month, the Optimus Elite runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and features a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, 800 MHz processor and 5MP rear-facing camera.

With the launch of the Optimus Elite, Virgin Mobile joins Sprint as the only two carriers to offer the Google Wallet NFC payments and loyalty service so far.

VeriFone Systems has unveiled its new Sail mobile point of sale solution for merchants who want to accept NFC and EMV payments on their mobile phones or tablets.

Like with Square’s mobile point of sale reader, the Sail device plugs directly into the headphone jack of an iOS or Android mobile phone. Sail can also be integrated with traditional VeriFone countertop devices that support EMV and NFC standards, according to VeriFone.

The entire Sail platform includes a mobile software development kit (SDK) and secure gateway with end-to-end encryption, real-time merchant fraud screening and boarding APIs, merchant processing and settlement services, and the ability to connect to third party marketing, loyalty and social media tools.
